You’ve heard about the 80/20 rule. And there’s no better example of this principle than the average man or woman’s closet. We all know that section of the closet where those “had to have” but barely worn items, trendy pieces that you’re waiting to be stylish again and the things that you really hope fit you again one day. If this describes you, then it might be time for a closet edit.
At Trevor Furbay Bespoke, we think every shopping trip should start right in your own closet. Before you start to shop for something new, it’s important to take stock of what you already own, refine what works for you today and remove the items that no longer serve you. It’s not about getting rid of everything and starting over. Instead, a wardrobe edit will help you create the space for pieces that feel like you–elevated, effortless and, most importantly, enduring.
Where to Start: Trevor’s Closet Edit Tips
-
Try everything on.Go into that section of your closet and pull out those things that have been hanging out a while. Give those clothes a chance! Assess each item for the fit and the feel. Does it fit? Do you feel great wearing it? If the answer is “no,” then it is time to let it go.
-
Think in outfits. You know that amazing skirt that goes with nothing? The shoes that just don’t work with your array of pants? We can help. A Trevor Furbay stylist can come to your house, and help you see what you need to turn these pieces into a complete outfit you’ll wear again and again. (Or, maybe we’ll offer some tough love if it’s time to let these things go.)
-
Curate.Who doesn’t fantasize about emptying out the closet and starting over. But we vote forcurating, over a total purge. Your wardrobe should be curated to reflect the life you live–from work-to-weekend versatility or day-to-night looks. If it fits, flatters and reflects your lifestyle, it should probably stay.
-
Look for patterns.Do you have the same t-shirt in multiple colors? Stock up on the same style of shoe? We can help you recognize these patterns and use them to better fulfill your wardrobe goals.
-
Identify your investments.Once you’ve edited and created a curated closet, the Trevor Furbay stylists can help you see what you need to bring it all together. Maybe it’s a new jacket that elevates everything or a pair of beautifully tailored trousers. Wardrobe workhorses like those are worth investing in–and finding those pieces is where our stylists really shine.
